I’m not the most organized person—I’m a little spacey—but I love a good list. It’s my favorite way to keep track of chores, groceries, and things to do, but it’s also the best way to keep track of must-have fashion pieces.

Here’s how I craft the perfect must-haves list:

  • I search on Pinterest, Instagram, the web, etc. and find looks that I love, then take note of all the pieces required. Are they wearing brown or black boots? Short coat or long coat? Skinny blue denim or black straight-legged jeans? You get the gist. These are two pics that kind of influenced my tucked-in sweater & vintage jeans look:

  • Once you’ve got your inspiration photos, find pieces that’ll help you create similar outfits. In the pics above, both girls are wearing vintage-looking jeans. I bought these cruel girl denim jeans from a thrift shop and used my basic sewing skills to hem them to my size. They’re my favorite pair of jeans now!

  • Notice the little details, like the slight/full sweater tuck. Side note: I recently learned two of the best ways to tuck in sweaters from Jess at @JesswithLess on Instagram. She created IGTV video tutorials that you should totally check out.

This is what’s on my current list of winter fashion must-haves:

  • Button-up sweater that can be worn as a shirt

  • Silk scarves

  • Trousers

  • A camel coat

  • A checked or gingham blazer

  • A polka dot midi dress (I’ve been searching for so long)

And here’s what was on my list at the beginning of the season:

  • Black sweater

  • Loafers

  • Turtleneck

  • Black jeans

Also, on a totally random note… I have a hard time deviating from wearing all-black, so an outfit without any black is a pretty big deal. Do I look happier in colors? Does my smize seem brighter? I’m only partly kidding.
