Steps to Finding Your Personal Style

There’s one question people ask me all of the time…

“How do I find my personal style?”

Honestly, it’s one of my favorite questions to be asked. I love helping people create their own fashion style, because it’s such a great way to express yourself and embrace creativity in everyday life.

My style has evolved so much over the past 5 years. From wearing all-GAP everything to now owning mostly used items, finding my personal style has been a journey. I’m definitely not done evolving my fashion—and I don’t think I ever will be—but I have learned some valuable tips along the way that anyone who’s looking for advice on developing your own style could benefit from.

Pick a palette (neutrals, bold)

Start to define your style by picking colors you love and building your wardrobe around them. Whether that’s neutrals, bolds or a mix of them both, this is an easy way to streamline your closet and kind of make everything coordinate together.

Find inspiration everywhere

  • It can be hard to stay inspired when it comes to your personal fashion. You can find inspiration everywhere, though! I get a lot of fashion inspiration from different accounts on social media, vintage magazines (old Vogue covers, anyone?), and Pinterest.

    • Pro tip: Create a style mood board (on pinterest or in real life) of clothes, art and fashion that inspires you, then reference it when you’re thinking about buying something. This will keep you from buying things that don’t quite fit with the style you’re trying to build.

Invest in what you love

  • Investing in pieces that fit your personal style can be hard. I learned this lesson when I bought my Veja sneakers. It’s so much easier to buy cheap items that only last like a year, but the cost per wear makes items like Veja sneakers completely worth it.

    • Things worth investing in: A reliable sneaker (like Vejas). A nice coat (something I’m still looking for). A non-Gap pair of jeans (I’m calling myself out). And a really good cotton sweater.

Don’t impulse-buy

  • This goes right along with the pro-tip above! Having a clear idea of the type of style you want to build will keep you away from making impulse purchases based on price or convenience.

Hesitating: it’s not worth it

  • It doesn’t matter how amazing an item is if it doesn’t fit the personal style you’re trying to develop. I love red cowboy boots and have so many pairs saved on Poshmark, but I haven’t bought any of them because I honestly don’t know that they fit with my own style.

And that’s it! The steps to finding your personal style. Remember, it’s a journey that never ends because you’re always changing and so is your fashion sense. Embrace the ebbs and waves, and give yourself the freedom to be super creative in what you wear!

Love love love,

Emma
